Colorado usually experiences mild winters, but every few years either a La Niña or an El Niño weather pattern can cause the state to have very different winter conditions. La Niña winters are typically drier and warmer than average, while El Niño winters tend to be wetter and cooler.
So, what's the difference between these two types of winters? Well, it all has to do with the ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean near the equator. During a La Niña winter, the ocean temperatures are cooler than normal, which can affect the jet stream and lead to warmer temperatures and less snow in Colorado. On the other hand, during an El Niño winter, the ocean temperatures are warmer than normal, which can cause the jet stream to dip further south and bring wetter and cooler conditions to the state.
